We are seeking expressions of interest from Optometrists regarding the formation of a low vision special interest group to be involved with the development of and staffing of an Optometric service within the Low Vision Service that is currently provided by Guide Dogs SA.NT. The optometry staffing of the clinic is anticipated to be sessional.
Vision Services is currently staffed by Orthoptists, Occupational Therapists and Orientation and Mobility Instructors.
Our professional staff understand that most people with vision loss still have some vision they can use. Any amount of vision loss can be very concerning for the individual and we can help our clients through this difficult time. Our Orthoptists are available for low vision training including the use of magnification devices and providing education to assist clients to understand their eye condition.
We are happy to accept clients whose vision is affecting their everyday life. This could include problems with reading, managing daily tasks, and mobility. There are no minimum visual criteria for a referral.
Our focus is to help clients to find practical ways to achieve goals enabling them to live as independently as possible.
Referrals are accepted from any client, family member, or health professional. A specific medical referral is not required.
If you would like to register an expression of interest in the development process or register your interest in staffing the Low Vision Service, please contact lindy.williams@guidedogs.org.au
