Aides to assist your hearing now on loan

May 20th, 2016

Did you know that the Guide Dogs Hearing Services team has a range of assistive listening, alerting and communication devices available for short-term loan?

If you have a hearing loss, the equipment loan scheme may assist you in a number of ways:

  • You can borrow a device to use during a one-off event where you expect you might need some extra support in a challenging listening situation, such as a family event, lecture, funeral or other group situation.
  • You can borrow a device to take with you to use when travelling away from home.
  • If you’re thinking about purchasing a device but aren’t sure if it will meet your needs, you can try before you buy, to help you determine how suitable the device is for your daily communication needs.

A range of devices are available for loan for a period of two weeks. These include personal communication devices for use with or without hearing aids or cochlear implants. Baby cry alarm packs are also available for loan for a period of three months.

After trialling a device through the loan scheme, one client commented the device “…has helped me tremendously to communicate a little easier, especially with my husband.” Another client who trialled a device in her workplace reported that the device “made my life so much easier and I didn’t feel so tired after work as I didn’t have to lip read as much.”

There is no cost to borrow a device, however a $100 refundable deposit is charged. Hearing Services has recently received a generous grant from Deafness Foundation to purchase additional loan devices to better meet the needs of our clients.

A free appointment with a Hearing Rehabilitation Coordinator is required to borrow a device.
