Community urged to keep "Eyes Up" from mobiles

A year ago Jasper Cleland traded his white cane in for a red one so people could see it better and avoid bumping into him.

It helps to some extent but he still has people bumping into him while walking either with his cane or being guided by his partner.

Now Jasper is joining Guide Dogs Australia in a campaign on World Sight Day in the lead up to International White Cane Day this weekend to encourage people to keep their “Eyes Up” from their mobile phones.

Technology opening up worlds

Technology is opening up our world at a lightening pace. Our Transition Group of young adults with vision loss were abuzz at the recent Hybrid World festival at Tonsley Park.

With assistance from Access to Arts they immersed themselves in this exciting world of the future and were able to touch and feel many of the exhibits to gain a understanding of what’s possible.

Learning skills for life

The journey to adulthood presents many challenges – how to cook for yourself, tackling the cleaning, finding your own way about and paying bills.

Combine that with a visual impairment, and there are other challenges to embrace, at a time when peer support networks may be changing as you leave school and go onto a job or tertiary study while wanting to lead an independent life.

Guide Dogs SA is assisting young people with a vision impairment to bridge this life challenge with its school holiday camp at the Warradale Urban Camp School and a multitude of venues around Adelaide.

Great to meet you at NDIS Expos

Great to meet so many people at the recent NDIS Expos at Noarlunga and Morphettville.

We'll be at the State Government NDIS Expo at Victor Harbour's McCracken Country Club on Tuesday 19 September from 11 am to 4 pm.
