Brood Guardians
Our breeding girls (broods), who are responsible for producing the next generation of Guide Dogs and Autism Assistance Dogs, are cared for by dedicated and loving volunteers across the Adelaide metropolitan region.
As a result of the expansion of our breeding program, Guide Dogs SA is looking for several dedicated individuals, couples, or families to take one of these special girls into their home.
Unlike Puppy Raising, becoming a Brood Guardian is a long-term commitment.
These volunteer families, with the ongoing support of our Breeding Team, offer loving homes and help maintain the health and welfare of our very valuable breeding dogs. Carers are expected to continue the dog's training, both at home and when out in the public, and participate in organised obedience and travel training sessions periodically.
As a Brood Guardian, you will keep the dog at your home for the majority of the year, where they will live as part of your family. They will then come into the Guide Dogs SA's purpose built Breeding Centre when they are ready to be bred, and just before they are due to have their litters.
Our breeding dogs enjoy a loving family life, along with the benefits of being associated with the Guide Dog program. Our broods are retired between six and seven years of age at which time our Brood Guardians are usually given first option of keeping the dog as a pet.
Criteria for Brood Guardians
Guide Dogs SA is currently taking applications for people to become a Brood Guardian.
Like our Puppy Raisers, all our Brood Guardians must meet certain criteria before they can be accepted onto the program. If you can answer yes to the following questions, please give us a telephone call to get the application process started.
- Do you live within one hour of the Adelaide CBD?
- Do you work part-time or less, to ensure that the dog is not left alone for more than four hours at a time?
- Are you prepared to maintain a high level of obedience of our dogs, and are able to attend periodic training sessions with the dog?
- Is your property securely fenced?
- Are you willing to have the dog live and sleep inside your home?
