About the event

The Electoral Commission of SA has implemented a range of measures for accessible voting at the upcoming State Election on Saturday 17 March 2018. The following information is provided to assist our clients who have vision loss.

Voting on polling day – Assistance and accessibility

Did you know that you can bring a friend to help you complete your ballot papers?

If you are voting by postal ballot and have difficulty filling out the ballot, you can ask a friend or relative to help you fill it in.

If you have a disability or a medical condition that makes it hard for you to enter a polling booth, please talk to one of the people outside the polling booth and ask them to let the polling officials know.

The manager of a polling place can help you vote outside of the polling booth, including in your car.

Large print and audio letter

In partnership with the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) the Electoral Commission SA has produced a large print and audio letter.

Auslan

A new Auslan video has been produced with assistance from Deaf Can:Do for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

Closed captioning

All TV commercials about the 2018 State Election will have closed captioning to ensure that everybody has a chance to be informed.

Voting workbook

Orana and the Electoral Commission SA have co-designed a workbook in Easy English for those who want more information about our three levels of government, enrolling and voting.

Easy Vote Card

The Easy Vote Card is now being posted to all South Australians. If you bring the Easy Vote Card with you to the polling booth, the polling official will use the unique information to quickly find you on the electoral roll and mark off your name. Taking the Easy Vote Card with you will make voting quicker.

Seven tips to help you have your say:

1. Polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm. The busiest period is usually from mid-morning through to lunchtime, so try and vote first thing in the morning or after lunch if you can.

2. Be aware that your district may have changed since the last State Election. You can use our interactive map to check your district and locate your nearest polling booths.

3.You can vote at any polling booth in South Australia. If you are outside your district, let the polling officials know and they will help you do a declaration vote.

4. Don’t forget to bring your EasyVote Card or App with you to the booth. You can still vote without it, but it will make voting faster.

5. Voting for the Legislative Council ballot has changed since the last State Election. You can read the new instructions and have a try of practice ballots on the Electoral Commission website.

6. If you can’t vote on Saturday 17 March, don’t stress. There are other ways you can vote, including voting early, voting by post, in a nursing home, in remote areas, interstate, and even overseas.

7. If you need assistance or make a mistake on your ballot paper just let one of the polling officials know. They are there to help you. You can also bring a friend to help you if you wish.
