International Guide Dog Day 2019

Date | Time
Thu 04 April, 2019

About the event

Guide Dogs SA/NT will celebrate International Guide Dog Day on Wednesday 24 April with our annual Paws Parade to honour the life-changing work of Guide Dogs, Autism Assistance Dogs and Therapy Dogs for people living with disability.

There can be no higher calling for a dog than to enable people living with disability to achieve their goals throughout life. International Guide Dog Day is an opportunity to say thank you to these amazing dogs!

The colourful parade will be led by the SA Police Band and His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, walking with our dogs and clients, volunteers, staff and supporters.

Together we will walk from Guide Dogs SA/NT office at 251 Morphett Street, along Morphett, Franklin and King William Streets to Government House for a morning tea and Awards Ceremony in the Governor’s Gardens. We would love to see lots of supporters alongside the parade route cheering on our amazing dogs!

The Awards Ceremony will celebrate the achievements of our graduating and retiring Guide Dogs, Autism Assistance Dogs and Therapy Dogs. With the Friends of Guide Dogs Awards, we will also acknowledge local businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to accessibility and inclusion by providing exceptional service to our clients, volunteers and staff accompanied by our Guide Dogs and Autism Assistance Dogs.

In the lead up to International Guide Dog Day, Guide Dogs SA/NT is advocating for community awareness of Legal Access Rights for Guide Dogs and Autism Assistance Dogs. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing stories of achievement from our clients and reflecting on the many ways in which Guide Dogs and Autism Assistance Dogs enhance access and inclusion for people living with disability. We encourage you to follow us on social media for all the highlights, and share your own positive experiences of access and inclusion using the hashtags #AccessAllAreas and #CelebrateGuideDogs
